Schultheis Insurance: Serving the Mid-Ohio Valley Since 1928

In 1928, Alvin J. Jolly founded the Jolly Insurance Agency in Marietta, Ohio after graduating from Marietta College. He ran the agency until his death when his widow took over the business and successfully ran it for several years. In 1951, Daniel A.T. O’Neill and family purchased the business from her and were located within The First National Bank Building where the agency remained until the year 1974.

Dan managed the O’Neill Insurance Agency until his brother, C. William O’Neill, assumed control in 1959. Bill focused most of his time in politics and the day to day operations were run in the trusted hands of loyal employees, Mrs. Monica Wright and Mr. Harry Mahan. Eventually, Bill became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Ohio and his life in politics required him to fully relocate to Columbus and sell the family agency.

Darrel L. Schultheis of Newport, Ohio purchased the agency from Bill in September of 1963. Darrel spent his early years in service of the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Beaver as a master welder. He eventually settled in Washington County and was the owner-operator of a large fruit farm with his wife Helen Warren Schultheis until the O’Neill’s encouraged him to purchase the agency. Darrel’s brother Dayton, of Logan, Ohio owned a separate Schultheis Insurance Inc. and became a trusted and valuable advisor to the newly established businessman.

As years passed, Darrel purchased the Clyde Ludington Agency in the year 1973, doubling the size of Schultheis Insurance. And with growth, comes change, and for the first time since its inception, the agency was moved in 1974 from room 826 of the bank building, to Attorney Hayward Strecker’s offices on One Courthouse Lane. This is where the office would remain for the next 15 years.

Darrel’s youngest son, R. Kirk, would join the family business in 1986 after working for Westfield Insurance Company for nearly 10 years. And with Kirk’s encouragement, in 1989 Schultheis Insurance teamed up with Dr. Wes M. Nida, DDS. to build a new building and relocate to 418 Third Street.  As of October 12, 2020, we have made our final move to the front suite within that same building.

Schultheis Insurance is a second generation, family owned and operated independent agency with a third generation, Allie B. Schultheis, working and learning alongside her father since 2019. We have been committed to serving the Mid-Ohio Valley community for over 96 years and will continue to do so with loyalty and honesty for many years to come.
